Detour To Destiny-Episode 2, Part 2

The wedding was taking place at St. Ariella Cathedral. It was the most beautiful church in all of Fidelity. Because the wedding was to be for family only, the huge sanctuary wasn't really necessary but Paulette had her heart set on a church wedding. When she had married Paige's father, the two had stood before the justice of the peace merely for legal purposes. This would be Paulette's fondest dream come true.

Paige and her Mom stood in the vestibule of the cathedral alone. Paulette was gathering up her courage to walk down the aisle to marry the man she loved. It would seem easy considering how excited she had been when they got engaged, but she became more nervous as the minutes ticked by.

Paige was doing everything she could do to calm her mother down. The closer the two got to actually entering the sanctuary, Paige was beginning to make herself nervous. Every time she thought about being near Riley's nephew, her heart skipped more than a few beats. In fact, Paige was sure that she felt more nervous than the bride. She was still more than a little upset at the matchmaking scheme her Mother had devised even though she was positive that she could suck it up for one day. Then Paige would never have to see Chris Jacobsen again!

She told her mother how beautiful she looked. Paulette was beautiful. She had a glow in her face that Paige had never seen before. That look made everything fall into place for her. Paige was witnessing the true and pure love that she wanted for herself. Her throat became tight as she held back the tears. Paige was happy for Paulette but it made her feel more lonely than ever and brought into keen focus what was missing in her own life.

Paige saw that Paulette had caught sight of her reflection in the tall silver mirror on the wall of the vestibule. She could see the gorgeous columns and fountain reflected behind her mother and wondered how she was ever going to get down the aisle without losing her balance.

Her mother walked closer to the mirror, probably to check her make-up. Paige was dying to get a peek inside the sanctuary before she had to take the long walk to the front. She looked back toward her mother and saw how gracefully the years had treated Paulette. She was almost 50 years old, but didn't look a day over 40.

When Paulette had finally gotten right in front of the mirror, Paige couldn't stand it another second. She wiped her hands on her dress and slowly made her way to the double doors. She quickly looked over toward her mom to make sure Paulette wasn't paying attention. Then she rose up on her tiptoes to look at what was inside. Paige wasn't quite tall enough to get a good look so she sighed and walked away from the door. She didn't know what made her so bold as she turned back toward the door and opened it just a crack.

She saw Riley standing at the front of the church under a beautiful flower covered arch. She peered to his left and felt her heart jump in her chest at the sight of him. Chris was wearing the same thing as when they met. Something about seeing him beside that arch brought all kinds of thoughts into her head. Paige was shocked at what her mind was putting together. She shut the door and walked quickly back toward her mother with her head down as unwanted images flooded her brain.

Paige raised her head and saw Paulette staring back at her with a tiny smile on her face. She remembered when she was a little girl, her mom would tell her that she could read Paige's mind. Paige believed it now by the look on Paulette's face. It seemed that she knew what her daughter was thinking. Paige shook off the possibility as ridiculous and asked Paulette if she was ready to get started.

When Paulette had nodded toward her daughter, Paige walked back to the doors and opened them both. Her eyes flew directly to Chris. Thankfully, he was not looking toward her. He had his hands on his hips like he was bored or tired of waiting. What a jerk he must be to feel bored at his own uncle's wedding! Paige was making up all kinds of reasons to deny the feelings that were rapidly growing within her heart.

She positioned herself directly in front of the doors as the piped in music began to play. Riley and Chris looked at each other as Paige started nervously down the aisle.
